An Accra High Court has awarded a fine of GHS1,500,000 against the former Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Abubakari Ibrahim Dey, for making a defamatory statement against a former National Security Advisor, Alhaji Baba Kamara.

Mr Kamara commenced the court action against the former MP on 20 March 2017 seeking damages to the tune of GHS20,000,000 and a perpetual injunction on the former lawmaker from further making defamatory statements against him.

Mr Dey, in three voice recordings, allegedly accused Mr Kamara of inflating the contract cost of the renovation of the vice-president’s mansion, and pocketed monies meant for the Salaga Water Project. He also accused Mr Kamara of diverting official vehicles for his personal use.

He, however, denied the claims when he was served the writ of summons and the statement of claim. The former MP stated that he had not authorised anybody to record or publish any defamatory statement against Mr Kamara.

After going through the full trial, on 5 April 2019, the court found Mr Dey liable and said his comments were intended to damage the reputation of Mr Kamara.

The court has, therefore, ordered him to compensate Mr Kamara with GHS1,500,000. A cost of GHS 5,000 was also awarded against him.

In announcing the ruling, an Accra High Court Judge, Justice Patience Mills-Tetteh bemoaned the trend of spreading bad news about people without cross-checking their authenticity.
