Apple looks set to reveal the next version of iOS at the annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference kicking off on June 3 in California. That’s when we’ll get the official rundown on new features coming to iPhones, iPads and iPods and a sneak peek at what Apple has been working on. But before that happens, a new leak has given us the briefest hint on what to expect. If you’re an iPhone user or you have an iPad or iPod at home then you can expect to see changes in multitasking and gesture controls as well as the fabled ‘Dark Mode’ that seems to be sweeping the tech industry at the moment. That’s according to Apple-focused website 9to5Mac which cites ‘people familiar with the development of the operating system’ in a blog post outlining some of the key advancements.

Following the launch of the new iPad Pro devices last year, Apple is expected to focus more on improving iOS for productivity – given that it wants the tablet to replace the laptop as most people’s computer of choice. According to the article, iOS 13 will bring in the ability for apps to have multiple windows. ‘Each window will also be able to contain sheets that are initially attached to a portion of the screen, but can be detached with a drag gesture, becoming a card that can be moved around freely,’ reports 9to5Mac. As you can imagine, this would be particularly useful on a larger iPad screen but it’s unlikely to be of much use on your average iPhone.

Apple is also expected to reveal a new ‘undo’ gesture which will involve making a three-finger tap on the keyboard before swiping left or right to undo or redo as appropriate. A change to the Safari browser means that it will automatically render the desktop version of a website when using a big screen device such as an iPad. It’s also being reported that a new focus on productivity means users will be able to drag with multiple fingers across a list or a collection of items to draw a selection tool and capture more than just one thing for copying or moving. According to an exhaustive feature in Bloomberg, iOS 13 will include ‘improvements to CarPlay’ – although it doesn’t specify what they might b
CarPlay is Apple’s in-car system that allows you to hook your iPhone up to the infotainment center. You can send and receive messages, get directions and listen to music with it. The program was due to be given an overhaul for iOS 12, but this was pushed back. Which is a good indicator it may get some love in the iOS 13 upgrade. We could see a new interface as well as a few extra tools for developers to get stuck into. Admittedly, it’s a bit of a niche feature, but petrolheads may approve. Lastly, Apple will almost certainly make the Dark Mode from macOS available on iPhones and iPads. This allows you to invert the colour scheme on the device and turn everything black. Gadget fans claim this puts less drain on the battery life and it’s also believed to help your eyes.
