First Lady Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo has lauded Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as a progressive and visionary leader, as the Asante monarch marks 20 years on the golden stool.

Mrs Akufo-Addo, who accompanied President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and a host of dignitaries to attend last weekend’s ‘Akwasidaekese’ at the Manhyia palace in Kumasi, took to Facebook to applaud the traditional leader.

The First Lady’s post read: “It was a weekend of rich culture in celebration of a remarkable leader. Hearty congratulations to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as he marks twenty phenomenal years on the golden stool. I congratulate him for his progressive vision and exemplary leadership during the period and look forward to many more years of service to his great kingdom and to mother Ghana.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ascended the Golden Stool as the 16th Asantehene on 26 April 1999.

The President is also expected to organise a state dinner in honour of the Otumfuo on 26 April 2019 as part of the celebrations.

Key among the activities for the celebration will be the unveiling of Otumfuo's statue and the sod-cutting ceremony for the second phase of the Central Market redevelopment project at Kejetia on 2 May 2019.

Also on the bill is a thanksgiving service for the Asantehene on 6 May 2019 to mark his 69th birthday.

The celebration of the 20th anniversary ends on 12 May 2019 with a golf tournament.
