Mr David Ofori-Acheampong, the General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has condemned the fracas that flared up between the leaders of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during the May Day celebration on 1 May 2019.

According to him, the day presented the opportunity for both the ICU and TUC to present their concerns to the president rather than jumping at each other’s throat.

The ICU-TUC standoff came up during the event due to the eviction of the ICU from the TUC office complex near the Accra Technical University.

ICU officials were seen holding placards with inscriptions which cast aspersion on the TUC boss and other officials.

However, speaking to Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Accra 100.5FM Thursday, 2 May 2019, Mr Ofori Acheampong said: “The action by the officials was disgusting and must be condemned. That was not the occasion for them to behave the way they did, especially in the presence of the President”.

“As part of Organised Labour, GNAT will want to apologise to the President for the incident. We will issue an official statement apologising to the president.”
