The technical head of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), Mr Abubakari Yeboah, has attributed the poor performance of Ghana’s players at the McDan International Tennis Federation competition held in Accra to lack of exposure.

No Ghanaian player qualified for the second round of the competition which was held from 22 April to 4 May 2019.

Speaking in an interview with Class Sports on Tuesday, 7 May 2019, Mr Yeboah said the lack of play time was a major contributory factor to the poor performance of the Ghanaian players.

He said: "Simply put, exposure. Our players do not [participate] in tournaments but the more you play, the more you develop your skills, endurance, technique and strategies".

He expressed optimism that with the needed exposure, more tournaments and training, local tennis players will improve and get to international standards.

On the back of media reports suggesting that the Sports Ministry and the government have neglected tennis, Mr Abubakari pointed out inasmuch as the government has a role to play in the development of the sport, individual players, too, have a role to play.

"When it comes to tennis, tennis is more of an individual sport. You’ll have to help yourself, then probably you can ask for help from somewhere, you should not expect the government to sponsor you, the government will develop the game from the basics, that is the juniors till when you exit the juniors and once you exit the juniors, it means you are entering into the professional world and when you get into the professional world you’ll have to help yourself financially," he stated.

Mr Abubakari expressed optimism that Ghana will soon produce a world tennis champion.
