The rehabilitation of the Achimota-Nsawam railway line is 95 per cent complete, the Minister of Railway Development, Mr Joe Ghartey, has revealed.

He also said test-runs have commenced and the line is expected to be re-opened for commercial operations soon.

The rehabilitation formed part of the Akufo-Addo-led government’s efforts to revamp the rail sector as part of moves to boost transportation in the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, 8 May 2019, Mr Ghartey said: “Rehabilitation works on the Achimota – Nsawam section of the line is nearing completion, about 95% complete. Test-runs have commenced and the line expected to be re-opened for commercial operations soon.”

He further stated that money has been earmarked for the extension of the rail network to the Eastern regional capital, Koforidua.

“Allocation has been made in the 2019 Budget to extend the rehabilitation works from Nsawam – Koforidua. The budgetary allocation for 2019 is GHS8,000,000

“The total project cost is estimated at GHS 134,632,915.00. Works to be undertaken in sections from station to station beginning from Nsawam,” he said.
