Don’t pay for Ghana Card; it’s free – Attafuah

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Professor Kenneth Attafuah, has said nobody should pay a dime to receive a Ghana Card in the ongoing registration exercise.

He also said officials of the NIA who are supervising the registration exercise are allowed to assist individuals who cannot generate their digital address to do so at no cost.

However, if a person wants the address to be embossed on a plate and fixed at the main entrance of their homes, that citizen will be charged GHS50 for that specific service.

Prof Attafuah admitted to Kwabena Prah Jnr. (The Don) on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, 15 May 2019 that there are people with no smartphones, hence cannot generate the address. Others, too, he said, had the smartphones but do not know how to generate the address.

These categories of people, he said, will need to be assisted by NaBCO personnel under Ghana Post to generate their addresses at no cost, except if they want the address embossed in front of their homes.

“There are people with no smartphones, there are others with smartphones yet do not know how to generate the digital address. So, we have recruited NaBCo personnel under Ghana Post with sponsored smartphones to help them generate the addresses at no cost. It is free. The Ghana Card is free, we do not want [it] to cost anybody.

“However, if you want the digital address to be embossed on a plate and fixed on the wall of your house, you will pay GHS50. That is separate from the services that are being rendered.”

He further indicated that persons who attempt to register with fake documents and false information will be dealt with according to the law.

“You have to submit a passport or birth certificate to enable you register. Without these, a person will need two witnesses who have been issued with a Ghana Card to vouch for them. Note that if you give false information to the officials, you will be dealt with according to the law,” he added.
