The chiefs and elders of the Apinto Divisional Council in the Western Region are pushing for a Ghanaian to be appointed as the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduaprim Mine.

The opinion leaders believe qualified Ghanaians are not being treated fairly by the miner, since, in their opinion, such professionals are always overlooked when it comes to the appointment of an MD for the Iduaprim Mine.

The chiefs, who have the support of the youth of the area, say since their land hosts one of the greatest mines in the country, it is important that a qualified Ghanaian heads Iduaprim.

The chiefs are planning on forwarding a petition to the authorities of AngloGold to that effect.

No Ghanaian has been appointed to the position since 2009.

Rather, nationals of other African countries have acceded to the position in the past decade.

South African, Billy Mawasha, was appointed as the Managing Director of Iduaprim in 2009. He was subsequently promoted to head the miner’s Africa Operation when his term in Ghana ended in 2011.

Another South African, Secelo Ntuli, took over as MD in 2011 and ended his term in 2016.

Zimbabwean Jasper Musadaidzwa, whose term ends in 2019 was appointed in 2016.

Both the chiefs of Apinto and Ghanaian workers of AngloGold are pushing for a Ghanaian to take over from Mr Musadaidzwa.

They have expressed their displeasure about what they see as the sidelining of Ghanaians as far as the appointment of CEOs and MDs for the multinational miner are concerned.
