Ghana’s Health Minister, Mr Kweku Agyeman-Manu has said the government will only export nurses with an appreciable level of experience to Barbados to work there.

He said nurses who have just graduated will not be sent overseas since they lack the needed experience on the field.

"We want those with some level of experience. We need those who have practised a little bit, some years into the profession, and when they go and work hard, the people will continue to demand more from us..." Mr Agyeman-Manu said when he addressed the staff and students of the Komfo Anokye Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Kumasi as part of his four-day working visit to the Ashanti Region.

He was, however, quick to add that the government’s decision to export nurses to Barbados is not conclusive as it has to engage the government of the Caribbean nation to facilitate the process and ensure that nurses exported there get better and proper treatment and also bring money back home to support the economy.

Mr Agyeman-Manu also assured the students that the government will do its best to respond to the needs of the health sector.

For his part, the General Principal of the Komfo Anokye Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Mr Francis Amonu Asamoah, appealed to the government to construct a bungalow for the teaching staff of the school.
