The government of Ghana intends building a senior high school dedicated solely to the creative arts, the Deputy Minister in charge of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr Yaw Adutwum has revealed.

According to him, the Ministry of Education has done the necessary consultative work with the Creative Arts Industry in connection with the setting up of the first-ever Creative Arts Senior High School in Ghana.

Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show about the government’s free senior high school programme and its attendant challenges, Dr Adutwum said: “[From] where I sit, I’m very happy that our schools are being built”.

“When I visited Fijai [Senior High School], Kumasi High SHS and a number of schools and I saw the new buildings that the students will be walking into in September, it made me excited.

“That is what excites me and that’s why I come to work at 6:30 in the morning to work, so, I see opportunities everywhere”, Dr Adutwum said.

He said apart from upgrading the existing schools to increase their capacity, the government is also putting up new infrastructure including the Creative Arts Senior High School as well as some science-only SHSs.

“If you look at what we are doing, about 800 buildings across about 400 schools, we are upgrading those schools to increase their capacity. And then we also have a few other schools that we are awarding contracts on; those are going to be built from the scratch, like the Creative Arts Senior High School, the first of its kind in the country – a beautiful school. We have met with industry leaders in the Creative Arts arena and it’s going to be built from the scratch”, Dr Adutwum said.

“We have other science schools, about eight of them, top-of-the-line 21st century science schools that are going to be built from the scratch”, he added.
