Smile Air has ordered sixty-eight MA-600/-700 planes for its operations.

The aircraft will cost more than US$1.2 billion and will be delivered between 2016 and 2021.

The wholly-Ghanaian owned airline’s spokesperson, Henry Zuta, disclosed to ClassFMonline.com in an interview on Tuesday December 22, 2015 that the manufacturers of the aircraft will deliver an average of 10 to 12 airplanes a year within the next five years.

“They’ll be deployed to serve a hub out of Accra, to serve flights all over West and Central Africa through the Accra hub, so that anywhere you’re going in West Africa today, you’ll come into Accra and there’ll be multiple connections,” Mr Zuta told ClassFMonline.com.

The new planes, according to him, will carry both passengers and cargo.

Smile Air is currently undergoing certification by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). It started the certification process in 2014.

As to when the airline is likely to get certified, Mr Zuta said: “You can’t say how far it’s gone because you keep going at it until it is done”

He said the “process has been seamless”, so far, adding that: “You do what is required of you and you wait for the results.”
