Samia Nkrumah has confirmed that Dr Onsy Nathan Anwar Nkrumah, who claims to be a son of Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, proposed marriage to her a few years ago.
"I only speak the truth, so, yes I confirm," Dr Nkrumah's daughter told Kwadwo Asare-Baffuor Acheampong (KABA) on Asempa FM’s political talk show 'Ekosii Sen' on Wednesday December 30, 2015 when asked if, indeed, Dr Onsy Nkrumah ever proposed to marry her.
Pressed further by KABA about why she turned him down, Samia Nkrumah said: "Oh dear me! Look we're serious ooo! I'm a married woman and I have a son… But the point of the matter is this Onsy chap is part of a political project to destabilise Nkrumah's followers," she added.
Dr Onsy Nkrumah surfaced onto the scene about four years ago with a claim that he was one of the children of the pan-Africanist. Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s known children are: Prof Francis Nkrumah, Dr Gamel Nkrumah, Samia Nkrumah and Dr Sekou Nkrumah. Gamel, Samia, and Sekou have, on several occasions, challenged Dr Onsy Nkrumah to prove he is a biological son of the late African leader.
Samia, who is seeking to lead the Convention People's Party (CPP), told KABA that Dr Onsy Nkrumah “is a fraud, I’m afraid. He should prove [he's Nkrumah's son]. Many of us knew him. Prof [Agyeman Badu] Akosa wrote an article about him a few months ago. Many of us knew him in London by his name Onsy Nathan Anwar. Look, I met him here in Ghana a few years before he declared that he’s Kwame Nkrumah's son."
"Why do you have to come out in this high-profile manner saying you're Osagyefo’s son and that you want to even contest as CPP's presidential candidate…Our father would never have denied that this is his son if he had come to him. I think this is a political strategy and mischief. We're all suspecting it because [of] the manner in which he emerged on the Ghanaian scene …prove that you are a Ghanaian. Is he really a Ghanaian? We'll have to find that out. You know you cannot just get up and say [you're Nkrumah's son]. You're talking about one of the main founders of this nation. You cannot just get up and say I'm his son," the former Jomoro MP said.
Samia Nkrumah's revelation that Onsy wanted to marry her substantiates an earlier claim to that effect by her brother, Sekou, a few years ago. "I met Samia yesterday and she said the man (Dr Onsy Nathan Anwar Nkrumah) had proposed marriage to her two years ago. So how can you propose marriage to Nkrumah's daughter and then two years down the line you say you are Nkrumah's son? Is this not madness? So maybe that person is a con artist or an imbalanced person but, as I said, his file is with the National Security or BNI," an angry Dr Sekou Nkrumah told Radio XYZ in Accra about three years ago.
He explained further: "My problem is that you don't go around saying you are Nkrumah's son when you are not. How can you be Nkrumah's son when all this time nobody has heard of you? I think it is dubious and kind of strange. He claims he was born in 1957 to an Egyptian mother. How would Nkrumah have had a relationship with an Egyptian mother and have a child with her and then a year or two later marry another Egyptian woman?
"My brother (Gamel) has stated clearly on one of the social media, Facebook, that he had met him several times in Egypt and this man had never said he was Nkrumah's son, so, he is surprised that the man is calling himself Nkrumah's son today," Dr Sekou Nkrumah said at the time.
Known children of Dr Kwame Nkurmah:
Professor Francis Nkrumah
Francis Kwesi Nkrumah is the eldest son of Kwame Nkrumah. He taught medicine at the University of Ghana Medical school, Department of Child Health from 1969 to 1980 when he became the chairman of the Department. From 1983 to 1990, he became the Head of the Paediatrics Department of Faculty of Medicine, University of Zimbabwe. Between 1990 and 1998, he was the director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research.
Dr Gamal Nkrumah
Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah was born in Accra in 1959. He is the second of Kwame Nkrumah’s sons but the oldest of Fathia’s children.
