The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti Region, Samuel Pyne, has dismissed claims that the Kejetia Market will be closed on December 7, 2024, to facilitate traders’ participation in the general elections.

Describing the allegations as “false and baseless,” Mr. Pyne clarified that no such directive has been issued by the Assembly or any related authority.

Reports had suggested that the proposed closure was discussed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, during a meeting with market representatives at the Kumasi Culture Centre.

The alleged proposal, which has faced opposition from traders citing potential business losses, has been denied by the MCE.

 Mr. Pyne assured, “The Assembly, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), and the Metropolitan Security Council have not made any decision to close down the Kejetia Market or any other market in the Kumasi Metropolis on election day.”

He added that recent security meetings were focused on protecting key installations during the elections rather than disrupting economic activities.

However, Mr. Pyne revealed that intelligence points to a possible attempt by individuals associated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cause disturbances at the market on election day.

“It appears this false claim was circulated by an NDC surrogate to create fear and panic,” he said.

“Such actions are irresponsible, and I intend to officially report the matter to the regional police command for investigation.”

He urged the public, particularly traders at the Kejetia Market, to remain calm and disregard the rumours, assuring them that all efforts are being made to ensure a peaceful and incident-free election.

The MCE reiterated the authorities’ commitment to maintaining order and protecting businesses and installations across the region on election day.
