Germany, Ghana explores labour mobility agreement to boost youth employment

Germany has expressed strong interest in establishing a labour mobility agreement with Ghana that would open new employment pathways for thousands of Ghanaian youth under a special bilateral arrangement.
The proposed agreement, currently under discussion, is expected to guarantee safe, rewarding, and dignified job opportunities for Ghanaian workers in Germany.
The initiative is modelled after a similar pact signed between Germany and Kenya, which has been praised for its structured and humane approach to labour migration.
Talks on the potential agreement were held on the sidelines of the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin, where high-level meetings took place between Ghanaian officials and key German policymakers.
These included German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Mr. Joachim Stamp — Special Representative of the German Federal Government for Migration Agreements — and senior officials from the German Interior Ministry.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okuzeto-Ablakwa, the Government of President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated its commitment to pursuing diplomacy that delivers real benefits to the Ghanaian people.
He said the administration is focused on tackling youth unemployment through strategic international partnerships that ensure decent and legal employment opportunities abroad.
He noted that the agreement is expected to be finalised and implemented soon, providing hope for many young Ghanaians seeking improved livelihood prospects through secure and structured migration.
