Ghana Revenue Authority unveils AI-powered trade data analytics system
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched a new Artificial Intelligence-powered trade data analytics system, dubbed Publican AI, aimed at enhancing revenue mobilisation and combating customs fraud.
The system, which will be implemented from February 2026, uses Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to detect undervaluation, flag high-risk goods, and strengthen customs capacity.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister of Finance, Mr Thomas Nyarko Ampem, emphasised the system's benefits, including improved efficiency, accuracy, and speed in customs clearance.
"The AI tool will help us achieve accurate duty determination across the board, reducing discretion and ensuring a level playing field for all importers," he said.
GRA Commissioner-General, Dr. Anthony Sarpong, highlighted the system's ability to provide real-time information, enabling customs officials to make informed decisions.
"The Publican AI system will give us 100% coverage of assessment, ensuring that every shipment is scrutinised and valued accurately," he said.
The system is expected to generate significant revenue for the state, with initial results showing a recovery of 15 million Cedis from five companies that had been falsifying trade data.
The GRA has assured importers that the system will not add extra costs to their businesses and will enhance transparency and fairness in customs operations.
The launch is part of the GRA's efforts to modernise customs administration and enhance revenue mobilisation, in line with the government's vision for a digital economy.
