Ghana Water MD inspects treatment plants to address water shortages

In a bid to tackle Accra’s growing water supply challenges, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, the Acting Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has embarked on a system-wide inspection tour of key water treatment plants to assess operational gaps and implement urgent interventions to boost production.
The inspection comes amid critical water shortages in Accra, where daily demand stands at 220 million gallons, far exceeding the 130 million gallons currently produced, leaving a deficit of 90 million gallons.
Mr. Mutawakilu, along with a team of Chief Managers and the Acting Deputy Managing Director in charge of operations, toured the Weija Water Treatment Plant, the Kpong Water Treatment Plant, and the Accra Desalination Plant to gain firsthand insights into the production shortfalls.
During the tour, he engaged plant engineers and operators to evaluate infrastructure conditions, technical constraints, and areas requiring urgent maintenance.
He stressed the need for swift action to address equipment failures, upgrade ageing infrastructure, and improve operational efficiency to enhance water supply to residents.
In addition to the treatment plants, Mr. Mutawakilu visited Mile 18 Central Workshop, a key facility where pipes, pumps, and drainage systems are repaired.
He also inspected the Central Store, which houses essential chemicals and materials crucial for water treatment.
He emphasized that swift repairs of old pumps and parts were critical to improving water production in Accra.
Following the inspection, Mr. Mutawakilu reaffirmed the government’s commitment under H.E. John Dramani Mahama to address water shortages and improve service delivery.
He outlined a two-pronged strategy involving:
Short-Term Measures – Immediate repairs on faulty equipment, maintenance of existing infrastructure, and deployment of modern technology to optimize production. Long-Term Investments – Rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure, expansion of existing treatment plants, and the adoption of advanced water treatment technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce losses.
Mr. Mutawakilu assured the public that GWL is prioritizing water security for Accra and its surrounding areas, emphasizing that both short-term and long-term measures will be aggressively pursued to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply
