Mobile money activity in Ghana climbed to an all-time monthly high of GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, highlighting the continued rise of digital payments across the economy, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data.

The December outturn marked the peak for the year, fueled largely by heightened spending during the festive period and the steady growth of mobile money services nationwide. Transaction counts also increased, reaching 982 million for the month, compared with 892 million recorded in November, pointing to both higher usage and expanding acceptance of mobile payments.

User participation strengthened further, with active mobile money accounts rising to 26.7 million in December from 25.5 million the previous month. Registered accounts also climbed to 80.5 million, reflecting ongoing progress in financial inclusion.

Growth in the agent ecosystem continued, as the number of active mobile money agents expanded to 491,000 by the end of the year, improving access to digital financial services across the country.

Funds held in mobile money wallets also reached a new high, with balances standing at GH¢39.6 billion in December. This trend suggests rising trust in mobile wallets, not only for transactions but also as a means of holding funds.

Interoperable transactions recorded notable gains as well, with values increasing to GH¢5.8 billion from GH¢4.9 billion in November, driven by higher cross-network transfers during the holiday season.

Meanwhile, conventional payment methods continued to lag behind. Cheque transactions totaled GH¢37.3 billion in December, far below mobile money volumes, while digital platforms such as GhIPSS Instant Pay processed GH¢73.3 billion over the same period.

Overall, the latest data underscores mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s retail payment landscape. Analysts expect the combination of festive spending patterns, expanding agent networks and growing smartphone usage to sustain momentum into 2026.
