Ghanaian rapper Nana Kwabena Appiah, particularly called Pure Akan, has explained that collaborating with other artistes is a sharing of value and a means by which each artiste taps into the other’s fanbase.

He was speaking on Class 91.3 FM’s Saturday afternoon programme The Big Show with guest-host Prince Benjamin (PB).

Loved for his Akan eloquence and storytelling gift, he revealed how he decides on collaborators for his songs. 

“It boils down to the song in question,” he said. “If you have a song, who would be the best guy or lady to feature or collaborate on the project with? That has always been the first step.”

He further explained that after reasoning to himself, for instance, that “Efya should be on this song,” he has “a discussion with my team” and when they agree, “we reach out to Efya. So it’s really about the song. It has nothing to do with me, who I like and who I don’t like. It’s really about the song” and an artiste being “a good fit for the song.”

The ‘Me Sika Aduro’ hitmaker believes collaborations improve an artiste’s listenership depending on who they decide to work with.

“Obviously it does,” he said and illustrated: “If the artiste is a big artiste, they get to share their numbers with me and if it’s a smaller artiste, I get to share my numbers with them."

"It does bring some good numbers,” he stressed.

In 2019, Akan was featured by Sarkodie on ‘All Die Be Die’. In 2020, the leader of the fanbase called Akan Abusua featured Efya on ‘Mensei Da’.

The rap star’s latest offering is a 16-track long play (LP) called ‘Nyame Mma (God’s Children)’.

On Saturday, 26 November 2022, Akan is hosting stars like Efya, Worlasi, King Ayisoba, Ayisi, Kofi Jamar and others at Alliance Francaise for his ‘Pure Akan Live In Nyame Mma Experience’.
