Drake is closest to Michael Jackson right now, Akon says
Singer and music executive Akon has described Drake as the artist who comes closest to Michael Jackson's status, citing the Canadian rapper's achievements and commercial success.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Complex Music, Akon clarified that he was referring to "accomplishments" rather than the level of global "passion and love" associated with the late King of Pop.
"Drake is the only one on that level from an accomplishment perspective," he emphasised.
Akon acknowledged the influence and success of other global stars, including Kanye West and Beyoncé, noting that Beyoncé also ranks close to Michael Jackson in terms of impact and achievements.
He maintained, however, that Drake currently stands above his peers based on measurable success.
"The numbers are right there in front of you," Akon said, arguing that the statistics support Drake's position as the leading artist in global music today.
The comments come as Drake continues to add to his list of commercial milestones. Following the release of his Iceman album and the chart success of the single Janice STFU, Drake surpassed Michael Jackson's record of 13 number-one songs, earning his 14th chart-topping track on the Billboard Hot 100.
Over nearly two decades, Drake has built a global profile that extends beyond Rap and Hip-hop. He has also found success in genres including R&B and Dance music, helping to establish one of the most commercially successful careers in contemporary music.
