Ghanaian gospel recording artiste and worship leader Akesse Brempong has said the country needs a media policy to protect her music and musicians as far as getting their due is concerned.

The gospel artiste was speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Friday, 5 June 2020.

He indicated that a media policy will shore up the growth of the creative arts industry as well.

He told show host Benjamin Akakpo: “I think Ghana needs a media policy that will protect our territory. For instance, when you look at the South African terrain, they’re allowed to play 80 per cent South African content on radio and on TV, 20 per cent foreign. It’s the same with Kenya and other countries where the music and arts sector are doing well. I think that legislation will help the Ghanaian music industry, not only the music industry but the arts grow. We must protect our territory and make sure that the people who are doing the work in our territory are getting their due.”

He, however, bemoaned the country’s lack of a proper royalty payment system for the creative arts.

“I believe, I think that structurally, our system lacks a lot. Even royalty payment system is a problem in Ghana. I was signing a deal a few years back with an international company and they brought me the list of the countries where they were going to take my royalties and my country was, my own country was missing.”
