Gospel singer Obaa Yaa Grace Ashly has expressed profound worry over what she framed as a lack of appreciation for volunteers in Ghana.

She spoke to Taller Dee on the No.1 Gospel Showbiz programme on No.1 105.3 FM.

She had been asked about her inspiration for famously cheering on the Black Stars, Ghana's national senior male football team.

While she said she did it for years out of a sense of patriotism and service, she admitted she would have appreciated some reward for her efforts.

She was asked what advice she would give someone who admired her and desired to walk her path.

"Before you take up this work, be sure to have the spirit of sacrifice. You'd need to sacrifice a lot to get to where I am," Grace Ashly readily responded.

"It would appear as though as Ghanaians we don't know anything about appreciation," she explained.

The Gospel star posited the country was robbing itself of great benefit by its disregard for well-meaning individuals who make sacrifices in service.

"I am sure there are people who could volunteer to do a lot of things for Ghana [but are hindered by the [lack of] motivation," she said.

She cited how the sanitation vigilantes called Bus Stop Boys were so passionate "because of the motivation" they receive from time to time.

For her 25th anniversary, she revealed she collaborated with the NGO to "clean gutters" at the Accra (Ohene Gyan) Sports Stadium, Accra.

"I donated some water, cash, to motivate them, too. I meant to motivate them. I love to see dedication and sacrifice," Grace Ashly noted.

She lamented that "apparently, there's discrimination in Ghana" unlike in the West where volunteers are encouraged to do more for the national gain.
