Ghanaian Highlife singer Akwaboah has chided those who criticise secular musicians for their involvement in gospel music.

This follows rants by Vison One FM radio presenter OB Nartey against music collaborations between secular and gospel musicians.

Gospel musician Celestine Donkor received backlash from OB Nartey and many others because she featured Akwaboah and female vocalist Efya on her latest song titled, ‘Yedawase’ (Thank you).

According to the gospel musician, some Christian media platforms refused to play the song because she featured secular artistes.

But Akwaboah told Nana Romeo on Accra100.5FM’s ‘Ayekoo Ayekoo’ show on Thursday, 21 January 2021 that whoever says that making secular music makes those musicians “worldly” or  “ungodly” “does not know what he is talking about”.

The ‘I Do Love You’ crooner appealed to musicians to normalise musicians switching from “secular” to gospel music and vice versa as and when.

He said: “At the end of the day let God be the judge and play the song…I’m willing to push the gospel more now because I think we should learn to bridge that gap.”

He also called on music lovers and consumers to, instead of looking at whether or not the song is good, “look at whether it is of benefit or focus on the message it carries”.

 “R. Kelly released Storm is over and it was all over. Nobody said he was this or that. Per our mentality sometimes, we want to always look at only the negative side and not the positive side.

“So why are they doing it there and we can’t have the same here,” Akwaboah questioned.

He also commended the 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards female vocalist of the year for her efforts.

Akwaboah, known in real life as Gladstorm Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr. further hinted his involvement in more gospel projects.

“What the lady [Celestine Donkor], has started is a good cause and I think I should be able to continue”.

The sultry singer, who is also known for being the writer behind some gospel songs added: “The way she was able to feature us, we should also be able to feature the gospel musicians so that we also send the message across”.
