Odumodublvck to anti-record label artistes – Drop the pretense, greed; even Jesus had help

A video of Odumodublvck speaking in favour of record deals has resurfaced amidst renewed anti-record label rhetoric.
Affectionately called Big Kala, he spoke on a British podcast, The CTRL Room, who published their interview on YouTube on October 17, 2023.
“You're bragging about being indie [independent],” he wondered. “What's there to brag about when Beyoncé is under a label? Kendrick is under a label.”
He buttressed that even the greats of yesteryear, “Fela was under a label. Bob Marley” too.
The rapper and singer underlined there is a need for record deals because “you can't do it yourself”.
“Even our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, when he came, he took 12 people with him. And that's God. He took people with him. But you say you want to do it on your own,” he stressed using his Christian faith.
The Wotowoto Seasoning hitmaker asked his indie mates who are unrepentantly opposed to record labels, “How far can you go?”
“Because you don't want somebody to take a little bit, take a gain from you or milk... That's even greed. You want everything to yourself. You want to produce your song. You want to mix and master it. You want only you,” he rebuked, not mincing words.
"That's why I don't even want to learn how to produce records, because there are some people that were born to do it, and they are my friends. If I start producing my records, they are not going to eat, so I'll let [them] do it," he revealed.
“If Jesus, who is God, came down and took other people [along with him] – he could have done it on his own now. Yeah. It's true. I understand. If Jesus did not do it on his own, who am I?” he doubled down on his apologetics. “So you need people to amplify your talent as an artist.”
Odumodublvck noted there is a time to be an independent artiste and another to collaborate with a stronger marketing force.
“Indie [is] good for a period of time to understand who you are, so you're not going to sign a deal because you're hungry,” he said.
However, he quickly added: “When you meet people that align with your vision, you [must] move with them and move on to the next level.”
The Nigerian music star admonished, “all of you that are indie and you're forming [pretending to be] Superman, find people that will amplify your talent too”.
The Native Records and Def Jam Recordings signee spoke about his own experience.
"30% of something can be more than 100% of another... of nothing. I've gotten to the stage where I've done everything myself: I've sharpened my armour, I've cleaned my bullets, I've cleaned my gun, everything, my shield... I just need direction to point me to where the war is happening. That's what the record label does," he declared.
Ghanaian rap legend Sarkodie, when he guested on the 2024 Hennessy Cypher, spoke against record deals, which in his opinion as an independent act of more than 10 years, sees as comparable to fraud schemes.
