Entertainment
Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy is the Artiste of the Year for the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

On the night, the artiste of diverse musical abilities, mostly hailed as a Reggae/Dancehall wonder, however, received five other awards: Record of the Year and Audio Engineer of the Year (with Mix Masta Garzy), EP/Album of the Year (for 5th Dimension), Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Songwriter of the Year (Manodzi with Angelique Kidjo), International Collaboration of the Year (Manodzi) and Collaboration of the Year (Liqor with KiDi).

Formally, this is the second time Stonebwoy has been crowned Artiste of the Year, however, in his acceptance speech, he asserted it was in fact his third win. He explained he was the unannounced winner in 2019. Thus, he beseeched the Ghana Music Awards organisers, Charterhouse, to reveal and confirm his heartfelt conviction.

He thanked Master of Ceremonies (MC) Portfolio for coming to Accra from Kumasi to “tell the truth,” in a campaign to secure votes for the hard-won victory.

He also highlighted his wife Louisa (Dr) for her support.

For a long while, King Promise was the favourite to win the accolade for the first time. However, in the days leading up to the June 1 event, a strong campaign was initiated to underscore Stonebwoy’s efforts and achievements for the year under review, January 1 to December 31, 2023.

Stonebwoy now joins rapper Sarkodie as the only two solo music acts to win the ultimate praise at Ghana’s biggest entertainment event.

His trophy was presented by the Charterhouse CEO Theresa Ayoade, the Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MoTAC), Andrew Egyapa Mercer ESQ, and the Creative Arts Council lead Gyankroma Akufo-Addo. While Ms Ayoade thanked event sponsors, Ms Akufo-Addo highlighted how monumental Ghanaian music and its makers indeed were, leaving Mr Egyapa Mercer to make the night's biggest announcement, without much suspense, however, due to time already far spent, he noted.

The 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), for its 25th anniversary, began at 9PM Saturday, June 1, ending on Sunday, June 2, after 3AM.
