Tems wins 2nd Grammy, becomes 2nd winner of Best African Music Performance accolade

Temilade Openiyi, professionally called Tems, has won her second Grammy.
The honour came to her on Sunday, February 2, 2025, during the 67th edition of the prestigious show at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Tems beat the likes of Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Wizkid, and Chris Brown – a surprising first-time contender – to clinch the Best African Music Performance honour with her Love Me Jeje. The Nigerian singer-songwriter is the second to win the award after South Africa's Tyla became the inaugural winner in 2024.
Getting on stage to receive the gong, she joked even though she had a healthy cardio from working out, her "heart was beating so fast".
The 29-year-old music star dedicated her Grammy to her team, family and especially her mother who was in her birthday season.
"Wow, dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing [me] this team. And tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys [show]. I just want to thank you mum," she said, explaining: "Because she has done a lot for me and my brother."
Bola Tinubu, Nigeria's President, commending Tems, noted she had brought "pride" to the country on the global stage for the "second time". Tems is now the only Nigerian with two Grammys to their name. Her first Grammy was via a 2023 Best Melodic Rap Performance recognition for Wait for U with Future and Drake.
Tems has a total of eight Grammy nominations.
