Fugu promotion to revitalise Ghana’s weaving industry – Abla Dzifa Gomashie
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA) has intensified efforts to reposition indigenous textiles as drivers of economic growth, with a renewed focus on promoting Fugu as part of a broader strategy to revitalise Ghana’s weaving industry.
The sector minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, reaffirmed that the promotion of Fugu is not intended to compete with Kente and other traditional fabrics but rather to complement them, strengthening the entire textile value chain and expanding opportunities for local producers.
Speaking at the NIB PLC Fugu Wednesday launch in Tamale, she noted that the initiative is expected to generate employment, empower women and small and medium-scale enterprises, and ensure that more value remains within local economies.
According to the minister, government plans are underway to establish a dedicated support fund for stakeholders within the weaving and fashion sectors. She also urged financial institutions to play a more active role in financing indigenous textile production to help scale operations and improve competitiveness.
The Managing Director of National Investment Bank PLC pledged the bank’s commitment to the cause, announcing tailored credit facilities for textile producers to boost growth and sustainability. The bank further declared “Fugu Wednesday” as official corporate wear nationwide, a move aimed at encouraging regular patronage of locally made fabrics.
The collaboration between the ministry and the financial sector signals government’s broader agenda to leverage Ghanaian culture and heritage as catalysts for economic transformation, job creation and tourism development, while preserving the country’s rich textile traditions.
