Economic management team is just an advisory committee to the government

Feature Article
Dr Bawunmia

I have observed with keen interest some outrageous attributions, misrepresentations and deliberate propaganda on the role of the Economic Management Team (EMT)and the fondness of section of the party to attribute the current economic woes to Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia because he is the head of the EMT.

This unfortunate discussion has been going on on various NPP platforms for some time now.

The most regrettable part of the whole issue is the direct involvement of the camp of Hon. Alan kyeremanten.

Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has been consistently attacked and maligned through no fault of his.

Why will anyone blame Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia for our current economic woes?

Is it for political expediency?

Is it for the fear of his competence?

Or is it out of desperation?

This write-up throws more light on the role and mandate of the Economic Management Team as set up by the government.

First of all, it is essential to note that, Economic Management Team is not a creature of the Constitution,  meaning its establishment is not by the constitution but by the Cabinet.

It has no constitutional limitations on the appointment of members.

Economic Management Team is an ad-hoc committee which means it can be dissolved at any time without recourse to the constitution.

It draws its mandate from the Cabinet, not the Constitution.

Economic Management Team serves as an advisory body to the Cabinet,  this means that its recommendations are not always supposed to be taken hook and line and sinker by the Cabinet.

It is however important to note that the council of state is a body that has the Constitutional mandate to advise the government not EMTs.

EMT advises the government on its policies and program but does not implement policies.  No ministry or Minister reports to the economic management team.

We all know how previous Vice Presidents have performed in the past and could conclude that Dr. Bawumia has done exceptionally well in the sense that, the Vice  President position is a very tricky one.

It takes someone who is extra competent to be useful in that office.

That has been the case with Dr. Bawumia.

Kindly permit me to quote Dr. Etse Sikanku, a senior lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and the Director of the Directorates for Research, Innovation, and Development.

" Dr. Bawumia has succeeded in transforming the Vice Presidency from docility to activism, symbolic representation to policy implementation, and from mysticism to realism.

When the history of democratic politics is written in Ghana, Dr. Bawumia will occupy a special place because of the courage, unorthodoxy, and aggression that he brought to the position."

To conclude, I would say it is biased for anyone to blame Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia for the country's current economic woes just because of his position as the head of the Economic Management Team.

Anyone who thinks this government led by Nana Akufo Addo/Bawumia has failed has no business contesting the ticket of the NPP and the legacy of this government.

I will plead with all and sundry to be circumspect in their public utterances and we go about campaigning for our preferred candidate.
