Tragedy struck at Manso Takorase in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, when an abandoned mining pit collapsed, killing three people and trapping six others underground.

According to reports, the victims had entered the disused pit to carry out illegal mining operations when the ground gave way, trapping all six inside.

A joint rescue team comprising local residents and emergency responders managed to retrieve three survivors, while the remaining three were found dead.

Confirming the incident to the media, the Assembly Member for Manso Takorase, Bonsu Dominic, said the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances leading to the collapse.

The Amansie area, notorious for rampant illegal and small-scale mining activities, has witnessed a series of similar tragedies in recent years.

Many of these accidents have been blamed on weak regulatory enforcement and poor safety practices in the mining sector.

This latest incident comes just days after another fatal pit collapse at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District, where seven people lost their lives and five others were injured.
