AMA announces National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise for Accra
Residents of Accra have been called upon to take part in a citywide clean-up exercise as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) rolls out activities for this month’s National Sanitation Day.
According to an official flyer released by the assembly, and posted on their official Facebook page, the exercise will take place on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Beginning at 6 AM, and continuing until work is completed, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and promote healthier living conditions across the capital.
Organisers are encouraging households, businesses and community groups to dedicate the day to cleaning homes, streets, drains and public spaces.
The campaign message stresses that sanitation is a shared civic duty and a demonstration of love and respect for the nation.
“This month, let us show honour and love for Ghana by cleaning our homes, streets and communities,” the notice reads, adding that “a clean Accra reflects our pride, unity and shared responsibility.”
The AMA says the programme aims to tackle persistent sanitation challenges such as choked gutters, indiscriminate waste disposal and littered marketplaces, which often contribute to flooding and public health risks, especially during the rainy season.
Images accompanying the announcement highlight ongoing desilting of drains, waste collection and market clean-ups, underscoring the assembly’s focus on practical, community-based action.
City authorities believe sustained participation in National Sanitation Day will help build a culture of cleanliness and collective responsibility, ultimately creating a safer and healthier environment for all residents of Ghana.
Residents of the capital city of Ghana are, therefore, urged to mobilise early, assemble basic cleaning tools and join neighbours to ensure a successful exercise across all communities in the metropolis.
A day before the exercise, Ghana marks 69 years of independence from colonial rule on March 6.
