Accra’s power demand can consume entire Akosombo generation capacity – ECG
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has revealed that the electricity needs of Ghana’s capital alone can consume the full generation capacity of the Akosombo Dam.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, ECG Director of Communications William Boateng explained that the country is currently in its peak power consumption season, which typically runs from December to March.
Accra’s load demand exceeds 1,000 megawatts, making the capital a major hotspot for overloads, he highlighted, adding that Kumasi is also experiencing similar pressure on the system.
He said more than 100 transformers supplied by the Ministry of Energy have already been installed with additional units being procured to ease pressure on overloaded areas.
Boateng apologised to customers experiencing outages, clarifying that the ongoing maintenance works are not a return to the erratic power supply issues previously known as dumsor, but are largely due to localised faults and, in some cases, poor workmanship on low-voltage lines.
The Ministry of Energy and ECG are actively working to resolve these challenges and improve power supply reliability.
