Bawku: President Mahama anticipates Asantehene's comprehensive, actionable report and roadmap to lasting peace
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major step forward in efforts to bring lasting peace to Bawku, a town long troubled by deep-rooted chieftaincy tensions and intermittent violence.
According to the president, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will formally present his much-anticipated mediation report to the government on Tuesday December 16. He made this announcement when the National Peace Council paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency.
The report is the product of several months of intensive engagements spearheaded by the Asantehene, who was appointed by the government to lead a neutral, high-level mediation process. His team has held numerous consultations with feuding factions, conducted fact-finding missions on the historical roots of the dispute, and engaged security agencies, traditional authorities and civil society groups to capture diverse perspectives.
President Mahama said the findings and recommendations contained in the report were expected to offer a comprehensive, actionable roadmap for resolving one of the country’s most complex and long-standing conflicts. He emphasised that the approach taken by the Asantehene prioritised dialogue, historical clarity and consensus-building elements he believes are essential for achieving durable peace.
On December 16, representatives from key national bodies including the National Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs, religious leaders and other critical stakeholders will convene at the Presidency to jointly receive the report. Their presence, Mahama noted, underscores the national importance of the Bawku peace process and the collective commitment required to implement any recommendations.
President Mahama expressed strong optimism that the mediation report will mark a turning point in the decades-old conflict. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to working closely with all parties, including traditional authorities and community leaders, to ensure that the proposed solutions were practical, community-driven and sustainable.
He stressed that genuine peace in Bawku would not only improve security in the area but also unlock economic opportunities, restore social cohesion and strengthen the broader stability of the Upper East Region.
