Big Push to facilitate AfCFTA making Ghana major trade gateway: President Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the strategic importance of the Big Push infrastructure programme, emphasising its role in linking northern Ghana to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger — and positioning the country as a major gateway for regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“Once completed, this corridor will connect the north to the middle belt and beyond,” he said.
“This is how we build economic sovereignty — by strengthening domestic infrastructure and regional competitiveness.”

President Mahama further called for collaboration and national unity, urging all stakeholders, government agencies, contractors, traditional leaders, and local communities to work together to ensure the success of the Big Push initiative.
“The Big Push is not just a development project; it is a philosophy rooted in inclusion, fairness, and shared prosperity,” he said.
“Let us unite to make this transformation a success. When the NDC says we will build Ghana, we do not just speak, we act.”

The Big Push Programme forms a cornerstone of President Mahama’s infrastructure and economic agenda. It seeks to modernise Ghana’s road network, empower farmers, create jobs, and drive an inclusive 24-hour economy.
Beginning in Wa, the initiative is expected to transform northern Ghana into a vital hub for trade, agriculture, logistics, and national growth, bridging the development gap between the north and the south while strengthening Ghana’s role in regional commerce.
