Businesswoman Niharika Handa Sues 4 media outlets over defamation

The four media outlets sued over defamation

Prominent businesswoman Ms. Niharika Handa has initiated legal action against several Ghanaian media outlets, accusing them of publishing false and defamatory allegations about her business dealings and personal affairs.

The publications, released on September 10, 2025, by Ghanaian Chronicles, Asaase Radio, News Ghana, and The Herald, allegedly contained unsubstantiated claims aimed at damaging Ms. Handa’s reputation.

Her legal team further expressed concern over the disclosure of her and her son’s passport details, warning that the exposure of such personal information compromises their security and risks identity theft.

Contrary to the reports, Ms. Handa maintains that she is not under investigation but is rather the complainant in ongoing criminal and civil cases against businessman Mr. Amar Deep Singh Hari.

The ongoing cases include:

Republic v Amar Deep Singh Hari & Another (criminal proceedings)

Niharika Handa v Amar Deep Singh Hari & Others (civil proceedings)

According to her legal representatives, the suits relate to the alleged theft of precious minerals and other valuable assets from Gold Crest Refinery Limited, for which Ms. Handa seeks both criminal accountability and civil recovery.

Ms. Handa’s lawyers have issued legal notices to the four media outlets, demanding that they:

Retract the publications immediately,

Remove the content from all platforms, and

Issue an unqualified public apology.

The outlets have been given 24 hours to comply or face legal proceedings.

Her legal team has also cautioned that individuals or organisations who republish or share the disputed content may be held liable for defamation.

They urged journalists and social media users to verify all information through official sources before publication.

“Ms. Handa remains focused on pursuing justice through the proper legal channels,” a spokesperson said. “These false allegations appear timed to distract from the serious criminal and civil proceedings where she seeks accountability for alleged theft and misconduct.”

Ms. Handa reiterated that her priority is ensuring that those accused of wrongdoing face due legal process, rather than being drawn into what she described as “public relations battles.”
