C/R: 2 sisters die after house collapse following heavy rainfall in Cape Coast
Two sisters have died after a single-room building collapsed at Gyegyeano, a suburb of Cape Coast, following heavy rainfall in the early hours of Sunday, June 21, 2026.
The victims were identified as 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa. A couple who was also trapped in the collapse sustained injuries.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), a distress call was received at 4:54 AM, prompting a response from fire crews from the Cape Coast Metro and Regional Headquarters Sub-Stations. The team arrived at the scene at 5:06 a.m. and began rescue operations.
All four occupants were successfully rescued from the rubble by 6:19 a.m. and transported by the National Ambulance Service to the Ewim Polyclinic for treatment.
The Fire Service later confirmed that two of the victims, believed to be sisters, died after being taken to the hospital.
Preliminary investigations by the GNFS indicate that the building collapsed after heavy rainfall weakened its structural integrity.
The Fire Service has advised residents living in old mud houses or buildings showing signs of structural weakness to seek professional assessment and vacate any structure considered unsafe, particularly during the rainy season.
