The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has successfully concluded a search and rescue operation for distressed fishermen stranded approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano and Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

The fishermen became stranded after an attack by robbers, who seized their outboard motors and personal belongings.

Affected vessels included Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.

The rescue mission was spearheaded by the Ghana Navy, with support from the Ghana Air Force and local fishermen.

The Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron, equipped with fast interceptors and assisted by ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands, played a central role in evacuating the stranded fishermen safely.

A total of 24 fishermen were rescued to Tema, while 47 were evacuated to Senya Bereku.

Interviews with the rescued individuals confirmed that no Ghanaian fishermen were kidnapped during the incident.

The Ghana Navy continues to patrol the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone, including the affected areas, urging all fishermen and maritime users to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity.

The armed forces also acknowledged the timely support of Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, Member of Parliament for the area, as well as the local fisherfolk and residents of Senya Bereku, whose assistance was instrumental in the rescue operation.

The Ghana Navy reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction.
