Teacher union strike

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers of Ghana (CCTGH) has served notice they are unwavering in their decision to strike over the government’s failure to pay their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to cushion them in the current economic hardship.

The Coalition shared its members are demanding COLA as a right in the wake of the economic difficulties.

“We careless about the repercussions of the Covid pandemic, the International Monetary Fund economic bailout or the Russia-Ukraine war', a spokesperson for CCTGH, Mr Adoquaye Aryeequaye Awuley said.

Speaking in an interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s evening news on Monday, July 4, 2022, after four teacher unions namely; Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU) and CCTGH declared a nationwide strike, Mr Awuley noted that “for now, all we care about is for the government to pay us our due and not what the pandemic among others has brought onto the government and for that matter the country”.

“As stakeholders in the education sector, we wrote to the government indicating our resolve to strike if the government fails to engage us on the payment of COLA…the government did not even dignify the said letters with a response,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has invited the leadership of the teacher unions to discuss the way forward
