A Coalition of Krobo Groups has petitioned the President to direct the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highways Authority to ensure the immediate reconstruction of the Somanya-Odumase-Kpong road within sixty (60) days.

The road, which was last reconstructed in 2016 by First Sky Construction Ltd., began to deteriorate just a few years after completion.

“We respectfully submit this petition on behalf of the people and all road users in the Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo municipalities concerning the abandoned Somanya-Odumase-Kpong road.

The condition of this road has now deteriorated beyond tolerable limits.

We kindly request that the government mobilise the contractor to resume work on the road within 60 days from the date of this petition,” the statement said.

The Somanya-Kpong road is a critical transportation artery that links Somanya, Odumase-Krobo, and Kpong, and serves as a major route connecting the Krobo area, the Akosombo-Tema industrial corridor, and the Volta Region.

According to the group, the rapid deterioration of the road was a result of continuous movement of heavy limestone-hauling trucks along the stretch and the failure of successive governments to employ materials suitable to withstand such weight.

“Since the transition in January 2025, work on the project has been abandoned for several months due to the government's non-payment to the contractor.

The deplorable nature of the road has become the daily reality for motorists, schoolchildren, traders, and health workers along the route”

In June 2025, the leadership of the youth groups met with the Municipal Chief Executives (MCES) of both Lower Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo.

The MCEs assured that the government would address the problem, but could not provide any concrete timeline.

“Should this period lapse without concrete progress, we shall be left with no option but to deploy legitimate civil mechanisms to protest in the strongest possible terms,” the statement added.
