The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has moved to clarify public concerns surrounding its vehicle onboarding process, assuring motorists that there is no immediate restriction on driving for those yet to complete the exercise.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, said recent media reports had misrepresented the nature and intent of the onboarding system, creating unnecessary public anxiety.

Mr. Kotey explained that the onboarding process is not a new or sudden directive, but part of a long-standing system that has been in operation for the past three years.

He noted that the process is integrated into the Vehicle Registration System (VRS), which was officially launched in February 2024, and is being implemented as a phased technical upgrade.

“Contrary to some reports, vehicle owners are not prohibited from driving if they have not yet completed the onboarding,” the DVLA CEO clarified.

He encouraged owners of vehicles registered prior to 2023 to take advantage of the onboarding process, but stressed that there is no urgency or deadline that requires immediate action.

According to him, the system has been designed for convenience, allowing vehicle details to be updated seamlessly during routine Roadworthy certificate renewals.

Mr. Kotey also urged the public to disregard what he described as sensationalist headlines and rely only on verified sources for accurate information.

“For correct and reliable updates, the public should refer exclusively to my official communication channels and the DVLA’s verified platforms,” he advised.

The clarification comes amid heightened public discussion about the DVLA’s digital reforms, which form part of broader efforts to modernise vehicle registration and data management systems in Ghana.
