Deputy Defence Minister presents new colours to Western Naval command
The Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, has presented new colours to the Western Naval Command and commissioned the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) PRU at Sekondi, as part of ongoing efforts to modernise the Ghana Navy and strengthen its operational readiness.
The ceremony, which brought together senior military officers and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, forms part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance maritime security and protect the country’s coastal assets.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Brogya Genfi underscored the critical role of maritime security in Ghana’s national defence architecture.
He noted that as a coastal state, Ghana cannot achieve comprehensive national security without a robust and effective naval force, particularly at a time when the growing blue economy presents both vast opportunities and emerging threats.
He described the presentation of colours as one of the highest symbols of national trust and confidence bestowed upon a military unit, explaining that the colours go beyond ceremonial significance.
“The colours represent a solemn bond between the Republic and the Ghana Armed Forces,” he said, urging naval personnel to remain steadfast in upholding the values, discipline and honour the colours embody.
The Deputy Minister further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equipping the Navy with the necessary logistical, operational and welfare support to enable it to effectively carry out its constitutional mandate.
The inauguration of GNS PRU is expected to boost the Navy’s capacity to safeguard Ghana’s territorial waters, combat maritime crimes and secure the country’s maritime domain.
