Dr. Boris Baidoo announces approved farm and retail egg prices
The National Vice President of the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana, Dr. Boris Baidoo, has cautioned egg sellers and fried-egg vendors against excessive pricing, explaining that current farmgate and retail prices do not justify the high prices some sellers are charging.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Accra 100.5 FM, Dr. Baidoo said that importers and all stakeholders should collaborate with poultry farmers to strengthen the industry, increase employment, and support Ghana’s economy.
He noted that under normal circumstances, farmgate prices for eggs should follow a standard structure to ensure fairness for both farmers and retailers.
According to him, the recommended farmgate (farm garage) prices should be:
Unsalted eggs: GHS60 per crate
Small eggs: GHS50–56 per crate
Medium eggs: GHS 58 per crate
Large eggs: GHS 62 per crate
However, due to challenges faced by egg distributors—such as taking bank loans, paying interest, dealing with broken eggs, and losses from eggs going bad—prices slightly increase by the time the products reach retail markets.
Based on these factors, Dr. Baidoo said retailers typically sell eggs at:
Unsalted: GHS70
Small: GHS66
Medium: GHS68
Large: GHS72
He explained that fried-egg vendors also earn a reasonable margin.
If a seller buys a crate at around GHS70 with a GHS10 profit margin added by wholesalers, the vendor can make an additional GHS20 profit after frying, considering they buy ingredients and other supplies.
“A crate gives about 30 eggs, and even when they sell each egg at GHS3, they make around GHS90, which is enough.
There is no justification for selling above this,” Dr. Baidoo stressed.
He urged egg sellers and vendors to stick to fair pricing and avoid taking advantage of consumers, especially when production costs have not increased.
