Dr Harrison Kofi Belley has been elected the new Volta Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), following a closely contested election held on Monday, June 30.

Dr Belley narrowly defeated the incumbent, Mr Emmanuel Elikplim Kwabla Agbaxode, by securing 27 votes against 24 in a hotly contested race that drew heightened interest and strong participation among journalists across the region.

The election, conducted peacefully and transparently under the supervision of the GJA Electoral Committee, has been hailed as a sign of the association’s growing democratic maturity. Observers included members of the media and regional stakeholders.

Other Winners

The election also saw other new faces emerging in key positions:

* Vice Chairperson: Ivy Setordzi won decisively with 34 votes, beating her opponent MacLean Nordzi, who polled 17.

* Treasurer: King Freeman Xorlali Nutsukpoe clinched victory with 26 votes, narrowly edging out incumbent Ewoenam Kpodo, who garnered 25 votes.

* Secretary: Lambert Kofi Atsivor was elected unopposed and will join the new executive team.

Dr Belley’s Vision: Unity, Welfare, and Accountability

In his post-election address, Dr Belley pledged to usher in a new era of unity, transparency, and member-centered leadership.

“This is a victory not just for me, but for all journalists in the Volta Region,” he said.

“We must now come together, regardless of our differences during the elections, and work as one body to uplift the standards of journalism and the welfare of our members.”

Dr Belley outlined his agenda which includes:

* Fostering a united front among media practitioners in the region

* Establishing a transparent and efficient system for the payment of membership dues

* Creating a strong welfare support mechanism for members

* Advocating for improved working conditions and promoting professionalism

Support and Solidarity

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, himself a member of the association visited the polling venue to show solidarity with all candidates. While he chose not to cast his vote, he assured contestants of his full support for whoever emerged victorious in the interest of journalism development in the region.

Dr Belley’s election marks a new chapter for the GJA in the Volta Region, as members look ahead with hope for a revitalised and more inclusive association that champions the interests of journalists and the broader media landscape.
