The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has explained the main factors contributing to high electricity consumption among its customers.

ECG Director of Communications William Boateng explained on Asempa FM that while tariffs are regulated, usage patterns largely determine bills.

He noted that an increase in the number of electrical appliances and longer usage periods, particularly of cooling devices during hot weather, drives higher consumption.

“Wiring can affect efficiency as well, and the meter itself may malfunction,” Mr Boateng added.

He assured ECG assistance to resolve faulty metre concerns.

“Fortunately, our system can track your consumption, so when you report any issues, we can verify and replace faulty meters,” he said.

Mr Boateng also identified high-energy appliances such as electric cookers, washing machines, deep fryers, irons, water heaters, hand dryers, and desktop computers with monitors.

He encouraged consumers to consider low-energy alternatives to manage electricity costs.
