Four students arrested after violent unrest at Wa technical institute
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, has confirmed that four students have been taken into custody in connection with violent disturbances at the Wa Technical Institute.
In an interview with Class News, he condemned the incident as a grave breach of discipline that resulted in extensive destruction of school assets. He explained that the confrontation erupted after some students resisted routine disciplinary actions. What began as an attempt to enforce basic school rules escalated when students repeatedly ignored directives to stop wearing unapproved attire and using mobile phones on campus.
A section of the students reportedly challenged school authorities and reacted violently when sanctions were imposed. The situation soon spiralled, leading to the destruction of property. Six vehicles parked on the school premises were damaged, and several window panes at the administration block and the multi-purpose hall were smashed.
DCOP Yiribaare noted that police officers responded swiftly after receiving reports of the disturbance. He also disclosed that a separate probe has been initiated into the school’s domestic bursar, after food items belonging to the institution were allegedly discovered in her possession. He added that the matter will be forwarded to court should the investigations implicate her.
Giving an update on another incident that occurred on December 5 at Saawie, the regional commander said officers who went to address a complaint were reportedly attacked and had their weapons seized by some youth. Additional personnel were deployed, leading to the arrest of nine individuals. Seven suspects have since been put before court, while two were released after questioning.
