GAF recruitment stampedes in Kumasi, Accra: President Mahama condoles with families of deceased, injured

President John Mahama has expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the military recruitment process at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

Six women have died as a result of a stampede which ensued, according to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), after a section of thousands of youth breached security protocols, rushing the stadium gates ahead of the scheduled time, for a GAF recruitment exercise.

Many others injured were admitted to hospital.

In Kumasi, a similar stampede occurred, leaving three people injured and hospitalised. This was confirmed by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). 

The president announced that he had ordered the suspension of the recruitment process to facilitate investigations.

The president observed a one-minute silence in honour of the deceased.

He was spoke at the launch of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative in Kumasi today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

GAF has announced the temporary suspension of the Greater Accra exercise, with the 15 remaining regions maintaining their schedules. A board of inquiry has been constituted, too, to look into the tragic incident.
