GHS calls for justice after armed attack at Akoti Health Centre
The Central Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has denounced a violent incident that occurred at the Akoti Health Centre in the Assin Fosu District on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Reports indicate that the disturbance happened while medical personnel were attending to emergency cases. According to information from the facility, two injured persons from Assin Wurakese were rushed to the centre for treatment after reportedly being attacked. While they were receiving care, the individual suspected to be responsible for the assault also arrived at the health facility to seek medical attention.
Moments later, a group of people allegedly forced their way into the centre wielding dangerous weapons and attacked the suspected assailant in full view of staff, patients, and other visitors. The incident triggered fear and chaos, endangered lives, damaged the sense of security at the facility, and breached the safe environment expected within a healthcare setting.
Following the attack, the matter was reported to the Ghana Police Service, which has been tasked to investigate the incident, arrest those involved, and strengthen security at the Akoti Health Centre.
Reacting to the development, the Central Regional Health Directorate expressed deep concern, stressing that hospitals and clinics are neutral spaces meant exclusively for saving lives and must be respected as such.
In a statement issued on Thursday, January 15, the GHS stated that any form of violence within health facilities is unacceptable. It emphasized that attacks on patients or health workers threaten safety, erode trust, and disrupt the effective delivery of healthcare services. The Service noted that steps are being taken to reassure staff and ensure that essential medical care continues without interruption.
The GHS further reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of health professionals, patients, and visitors throughout the region and pledged to work closely with security agencies and other stakeholders to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The public was also urged to cooperate with authorities to help maintain calm and ensure the safety of all health facilities.
