GJA urges IGP to prosecute officers accused of attacking Class FM reporter
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to take swift action to arrest and prosecute all individuals implicated in the reported attack on a journalist from the Class Media Group.
According to available information, Samuel Addo was allegedly attacked by personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service while covering a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region on Monday, January 5, 2026. The officers are said to have attempted to stop him from recording the incident. A video that has since circulated on social media captures scenes of Addo being roughly handled amid confusion, as voices are heard shouting at him.
Addressing the media at a press briefing on Tuesday, January 6, Mr Dwumfour stated that handling the matter solely through internal disciplinary processes would be inadequate. He stressed that the incident amounts to a criminal offence and must be addressed through the judicial system to discourage similar acts in the future.
“The GJA is urging the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest, comprehensive investigation and prosecution of all those involved in this unlawful act. We insist that internal sanctions alone are not enough. This is a criminal issue that must be examined by a court to send a strong warning,” he said.
Mr Dwumfour further disclosed that Mr Addo has officially lodged a complaint at the Kasoa New Market Police Station and called on the Police Service to respond promptly and firmly.
In addition, the GJA has called on the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service, under Chief Fire Officer Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sapong, to openly denounce the incident, name the officers involved, and enforce strict internal penalties, including termination where necessary.
He cautioned that any effort to protect those responsible or downplay the seriousness of the matter would be strongly opposed.
The GJA says the demand reflects its continued resolve to defend media freedom and safeguard journalists as they carry out their professional responsibilities.
