Ghana's National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has received an insurance payout from the African Risk Capacity (ARC) and Global Shell Solutions to support farmers affected by a prolonged drought in 2024.

The drought severely impacted food crop production, particularly in the middle and northern regions, with production virtually coming to a halt.

The insurance payout, facilitated by ARC, will support affected farmers with drought-friendly seedlings and other initiatives to enhance their resilience to climate change. NADMO is focusing on risk reduction and mitigation strategies, rather than just disaster response.

Key Initiatives:

- Providing drought-friendly seedlings to farmers

- Educating farmers on climate-smart practices

- Enhancing resilience to climate change effects

- Supporting affected farmers with cash grants and input support

NADMO Director-General, Major (Rtd) Dr. Joseph Kuyon, emphasised the organisation's focus on risk reduction, saying, "My leadership in NADMO will be focused on risk reduction, not disaster response."

The insurance payout is part of NADMO's efforts to support farmers and mitigate the effects of climate change.

As Dr. Kuyon noted, "We cannot stop climate change, but we can put ourselves in a position to withstand its effects"
