Government moves to release UTAG Book and Research allowances — Haruna Iddrisu
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has assured members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) that government is taking steps to address concerns over delayed book and research allowance payments.
Speaking at the launch of the Ghana National Research Fund in Accra on Tuesday, June 16, Mr. Iddrisu disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has already approved the relevant documentation required for the disbursement of the allowances.
According to him, the necessary administrative processes are currently being finalised to ensure lecturers receive their payments without undue delay.
The Education Minister emphasized government's commitment to resolving the matter through dialogue and preventing any disruption to academic activities.
Addressing UTAG officials present at the event, he expressed confidence that the issue would be settled without resorting to industrial action.
"I want to assure UTAG that President John Dramani Mahama is committed to ensuring that this matter is resolved and that there will be no need for a strike," he said.
Mr. Iddrisu noted, however, that discussions may continue regarding the exchange rate to be applied in calculating the allowances.
In a light-hearted remark, he suggested that while there could be differing views on the applicable exchange rate, there should be no uncertainty about government's commitment to making the payments.
He reiterated the administration's determination to strengthen higher education and create an enabling environment for research, innovation and academic excellence across the country's tertiary institutions.
The assurance comes amid concerns from university lecturers over delays in the release of book and research allowances, a key component of their conditions of service.
