The Sunyani-Ntotroso road, a key route linking the Ahafo and Bono Regions, has become a haven for highway robbers due to its deteriorated state, culminating in yet another tragic attack.

In the latest incident, armed robbers ambushed a Bibiani-Sunyani-bound Ford passenger vehicle, shooting and killing the driver and injuring several passengers.

The deceased driver, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was shot in the forehead and pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been deposited at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital morgue, where investigations are underway.

Two passengers who sustained gunshot wounds are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.

This brutal attack has reignited deep fears among residents and travellers who regularly use the road, prompting renewed calls on the government to urgently rehabilitate the highway.

The road, which was originally constructed during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has fallen into disrepair over the years, making it a target zone for criminal activities.

Reports suggest that numerous lives have been lost on this stretch due to armed robbery attacks, with victims often stripped of their money, mobile phones, and other valuables.

Richard Adu, Assemblyman for the Atronie Electoral Area, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, confirmed the fatality in interviews with CTV and Accra FM.

He described the growing insecurity on the road as deeply alarming and called for immediate intervention.

Some commuters who spoke to the media said they live in constant fear of using the road.

A female farmer from the Atronie farming community lamented that she and her fellow farmers can no longer safely access their farms due to frequent robberies and sporadic gunfire along the route.

Residents and passengers believe the poor condition of the road is a major factor enabling the robbers to operate freely.

They are therefore urging the government and security agencies to act swiftly to fix the road and intensify patrols to restore safety and public confidence
