KATH doctors suspend strike following intervention by Otumfuo
Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have voted overwhelmingly to suspend their strike action following high-level interventions by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and key stakeholders in the Ashanti Region.
The decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) held on Monday, June 9, 2026, at the Disaster Classroom of the Accident and Emergency Centre of the hospital.
According to a summary of the meeting, the suspension of the industrial action took effect from 6:00 p.m. on June 9, 2026.
The move follows engagements involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Board of Directors of KATH, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC), the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, and other stakeholders aimed at resolving concerns raised by the doctors.
Members agreed on a number of measures to improve healthcare delivery and emergency response systems within the region.
Among the key decisions was the establishment of a referral platform to better manage critical patient cases and coordinate patient transfers among health facilities.
The meeting also highlighted the need for effective public communication on healthcare services and the adoption of a bed management system to address patient overflow and facilitate reverse referrals to appropriate health facilities.
Doctors further stressed the importance of obtaining clear implementation timelines and operational guidelines from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to ensure that agreed reforms are effectively carried out.
As part of the resolutions, KADA resolved to continue contributing to the development of a regional healthcare policy framework aimed at strengthening healthcare coordination and service delivery across the region.
The Association also called for a written response from the Ashanti Regional Minister outlining government's position on issues raised during recent engagements.
Members insisted that any official response should be made publicly available to ensure transparency.
Additionally, the doctors proposed the preparation of a comprehensive document outlining emergency department operations and referral coordination structures with other health facilities to reduce congestion at KATH and improve patient care.
The Association emphasized that all patient redistribution through the proposed referral platform must be carefully coordinated to ensure patient safety and appropriate treatment pathways.
KADA also agreed to consult its national leadership before issuing any public statements or taking further decisions, ensuring that future communications align with national directives.
The motion to suspend the strike action was moved by Dr. Bernard Nkum and Dr. Obaa Panyin Acquah Nyarko and supported by Dr. Samuel Aseidu Koranteng, Dr. Kwaku Nyame, and Dr. Awoonor Williams.
The motion was carried by an overwhelming majority, with 46 members voting in favour and one member voting against the suspension.
The decision is expected to restore normal clinical services at KATH while stakeholders work towards implementing the agreed reforms aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region.
